FTL should automatically update with the new content if you already own it. Anybody who buys the game after this point will receive the Advanced Edition for free.
You may feel what it’s like to operate a spacecraft in FTL while attempting to rescue the galaxy. It’s a perilous mission where each encounter offers a different problem with several possible answers. If a strong missile bombardment disables your shields, what would you do? Would you rather put all of your energy into the engines in an effort to flee, build up more armaments to completely destroy your adversary, or send a boarding party to take them out? You can embark on a journey with your ship and crew through a randomly generated galaxy full of splendour and heartbreaking defeat in this “spaceship simulation roguelike-like.”
